Amorim left frustrated as late Magassa strike costs United crucial points

Manchester United appeared destined for their fifth victory in eight games under Ruben Amorim before Soungoutou Magassa’s dramatic 83rd-minute equaliser left the Portuguese manager seething at Old Trafford. The West Ham midfielder capitalised on defensive lapses to score his first goal for the Hammers, denying United what would have been a morale-boosting triumph against relegation-threatened opposition.

The equaliser originated from Andy Irving’s corner, which exposed United’s defensive frailties in alarming fashion. Leny Yoro, introduced as a substitute after being surprisingly dropped from the starting lineup, failed to clear his lines with a wayward header. Jarrod Bowen then found himself unmarked by Bruno Fernandes, flicking the ball goalwards before Noussair Mazraoui cleared off the line, only for the rebound to fall perfectly for Magassa to drive home the leveller.

United had taken the lead through Diogo Dalot’s expertly-taken finish after Casemiro’s effort deflected off Mateus Fernandes into the Portuguese defender’s path. The hosts controlled large portions of the contest and created several promising opportunities, with Joshua Zirkzee and Fernandes both going close in a frantic goalmouth scramble that saw Aaron Wan-Bissaka clear off the line for the visitors.

Amorim’s tactical gamble of starting 19-year-old Ayden Heaven in central defence backfired spectacularly, with the teenager receiving an early yellow card and being turned twice by veteran striker Callum Wilson before his half-time substitution. The manager’s post-match assessment was brutally honest, admitting he felt “angry and frustrated” while highlighting his team’s persistent inconsistency problems that continue to plague their campaign.

The result leaves United with 22 points from 14 games, maintaining their position in mid-table mediocrity while West Ham earned a precious point in their battle against relegation. Amorim acknowledged the defensive errors that cost his side, particularly criticising the marking on set pieces where height disadvantages had been identified as a potential weakness beforehand.
