Magassa’s Late Strike Denies Manchester United Victory Against West Ham
Manchester United were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by West Ham United at Old Trafford on Thursday evening, with Soungoutou Magassa’s 83rd-minute equaliser cancelling out Diogo Dalot’s second-half opener.
The result leaves Ruben Amorim’s side with just 22 points from 14 Premier League matches, while the Hammers earned a precious point in their battle against relegation after climbing off the bottom of the table.
Dalot had given United the lead in the 69th minute with an expertly taken finish after Casemiro’s shot deflected off Mateus Fernandes and fell kindly to the Portuguese defender.
The goal appeared to have secured United’s fifth victory in eight matches under Amorim, but defensive lapses proved costly once again for the home side in front of their disappointed supporters.
West Ham’s equaliser stemmed from poor defending at a corner kick, with Leny Yoro failing to clear Andy Irving’s delivery before Jarrod Bowen flicked the ball on unmarked.
Noussair Mazraoui cleared Bowen’s effort off the line, but the ball fell perfectly for Magassa to drive home his first goal for the club and silence Old Trafford.
The draw maintains United’s position in 13th place, nine points behind fifth-placed Brighton in the race for European qualification.
West Ham remain in the relegation zone with 12 points from 14 matches, but the point could prove vital in their survival bid as they continue to battle against the drop under manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
Amorim expressed his frustration after the match, describing himself as “angry and frustrated” with his team’s inability to see out the victory.
The Portuguese manager highlighted his side’s inconsistency and defensive frailties, particularly from set pieces, as United dropped two more points at home and missed the opportunity to climb the Premier League table.
