Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim delivered a robust defence of his decision to continually omit England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo during a tense press conference ahead of Monday’s fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers, insisting he will only select players he believes can help the team win matches.
Amorim Stands Firm on Mainoo Omission Despite Growing United Academy Concerns
The 20-year-old England international has failed to start a single Premier League match this season under Amorim and remained an unused substitute throughout Thursday’s 1-1 draw with West Ham United at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese manager faced repeated questioning about Mainoo’s continued absence from his starting eleven during Friday’s pre-match media duties.
Amorim acknowledged the risk of Mainoo becoming demoralised but remained steadfast in his selection policy, stating he focuses solely on fielding what he considers his strongest available team.
The former Sporting Lisbon boss pointed to competition from Manuel Ugarte, Casemiro and captain Bruno Fernandes as factors limiting Mainoo’s opportunities in United’s two-man midfield system.
The manager also pushed back against suggestions he lacks faith in Manchester United’s academy graduates, defending his approach when questioned about the club’s proud tradition of developing homegrown talent.
United have maintained an unbroken record of naming at least one academy graduate in every matchday squad since 1937, with Mainoo representing one of their most promising recent products.
Former United midfielder Paul Scholes expressed his frustration through social media, claiming Mainoo is being “ruined” and suggesting the player might need to consider his future at Old Trafford.
The situation has created tension between Amorim’s tactical preferences and expectations surrounding one of England’s most promising young midfielders.
Amorim’s unwillingness to adapt his 3-4-2-1 formation leaves Mainoo competing for limited opportunities, with Fernandes’ durability and the manager’s preference for defensive solidity in midfield restricting the youngster’s pathway into the first team.
United face Wolves at Molineux on Monday Night Football as pressure mounts on the Portuguese coach to integrate his talented academy products.
